It’s Up to You, New York… New York!

It’s Up to You, New York… New York!

As New Yorkers, we’ve been through a lot in the past couple of decades. COVID-19 is testing our resolve as a city once again. Right now, it may feel like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, but New York will get through this crisis as we always have in the past.

Business as Unusual

Throughout March and April, business has been more unusual than it’s ever been. We’ve been able to close some transactions that were already in process and we’ve been able to secure a signed contract on another exclusive listing. And, at this very moment, we’re negotiating another deal. We’re also staying in contact with our clients thanks to Zoom calls and other resources. We’re sheltering in place and doing our best to ride this out just like everyone else.

So, where do we turn for hope and inspiration at times like these?

Music Bringing Us Closer Together

Enter Frank Sinatra and the familiar refrains of “New York, New York.” When this first citywide sing along happened at 7:02 pm on Thursday, April 9, it brought joy and hope to so many people—including us. We were so moved and so proud to see how our fellow New Yorkers clapped and cheered for the health care workers and sang along with Sinatra’s classic New York City anthem. The #ClapBecauseWeCare movement is completely inspiring!

Sinatra was only the first of the weekly “New York Sings Along” campaign led by the all-volunteer Peace of Heart Choir. Week 2 had everyone singing along to “Lean on Me” by the recently departed legend, Bill Withers. Last week it was Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” and this week it’ll be Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend.” We can’t wait to hear what song is next.

Together We Overcome

This event has practically melted the internet, as well as the hearts of all who witness it and participate in it. We were brought to tears watching all the videos on social media. It’s proof positive that our great city can weather any storm. Yes, we will be back. We will return to life as we knew it, even if a bit differently for awhile. We will all be stronger and wiser after this.

But What About Real Estate?

As for real estate, here is what we can tell you speaking from experience and studying the New York market throughout the years. After 9/11, the prognosticators said that no one would ever live in a high-rise building again. They were wrong. After the 2008 Great Recession, the “experts” bellowed that New York’s real estate market would never recover. Of course, they were wrong, too.

We all know that New York is the greatest city on earth, where eight million people from all walks of life live, work and play side-by-side. Today, we stand as one. No virus will ever rob New York of its soul. If anything, it is only making us stronger as a community.

We will make a brand new start of it. Soon. Stay strong, New York!
