Arts, History and Culture Are at the Heart of Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village is a neighborhood unlike any other in New York City. Historically known as a haven for artists and outcasts, Bob Dylan, Jackson Pollock and Edgar Allan Poe have all walked the streets. More recently, we saw the very first production of “Hamilton” happening at the Public Theatre.

Times They Are a Changin’

The Village has always been a very artsy and edgy part of town. Those old brownstones surely have many interesting stories to tell. Yet, recent years have seen an in influx of wealthier residents, new construction and a more upscale lifestyle. Renting or buying in one of those brownstones is no longer cheap like it once was. Though the real estate prices are higher and there’s more new construction than ever before, the inherit bohemian spirit of the Village hasn’t changed.

This is still a neighborhood where artists and visionaries can explore ideas and find inspiration, while visitors from other parts of the city can soak in the distinctive culture. You have many performance theaters like Barrow Street and Cherry Lane. There are numerous independent movie houses, including the IFC Center, the Quad and the Angelica. Top jazz artists still perform at the Blue Note and Village Vanguard, among other local clubs.

There are art galleries, bookstores and museums. Subway lines are extremely convenient. And of course, there’s historic Washington Square Park (and its famous arch) in the middle of it all. We haven’t even mentioned all the incredible dining yet. From classic Village haunts like Corner Bistro, Gotham Bar & Grill and Joe’s Pizza to newer restaurants like Carbone, Minetta Tavern and Mimi, you can never go wrong with an evening out in Greenwich Village!

Greenwich Village Real Estate

We could go on and on about the history and spirit of Greenwich Village because we love this community so much. As longtime real estate brokers in the city, we’ve helped our clients buy, sell and lease many homes in this unique neighborhood. We’ve seen firsthand how much the Village has changed over the years without losing its artistic heart and soul. It’s a place where old and new have come together to create something truly special, and that’s why we love it so much.

One of our most exciting listings right now is in Greenwich Village. It is a beautifully renovated 2-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom maisonette on one of the most coveted stretches of 9th Street, and it was featured in Architectural Digest! Read more about it here and you can get a taste of what the new standard of upscale real estate looks like in the Village.

If you haven’t been down to the Village lately, we encourage you to give it a visit and check out all the interesting things happening there. Even if you are not looking to buy or sell real estate, there is so much to do and see in this vibrant neighborhood.
